Here is the solution:

----------------------------------------

x and y vary directly for each other and given that the constant is 3

⇒ x = 3y

Find y when x = 24:

x = 3y

24 = 3y

3y = 24

y = 24 ÷ 3

y = 8

Answer: y = 8

x \:  = 3y \: (given) \\  \\ x = 24 \: (given) \\  \\ substitute \: the \: value \: of \: x \\  \\ 24 = 3y \\  \\ 3y = 24 \\  \\ y =  \frac{24}{3}  \\  \\ y = 8
