$let \: \: the \: \: number \: \: be \: \: z \\ given \: \: x = 1.4z \: \: \: and \: \: y = 0.8z \\ x + y = 1408 \\ so \: \: 1.4z + 0.8z = 1408 \\ 2.2z = 1408 \\ so \: \: number \: \: is \: \: z = 640$

BEJOICE: Increased by 40% means x + 0.4x = 1.4x

BEJOICE: similarly, decreased by 20% means y - 0.2y = 0.8y
