given that x is obtained when z is increased by 40%
⇒ x = z + 2z/5 = 7z/5
given that y is obtained when z is reduced by 20%
⇒ y = z - z/5 = 4z/5
given tha x + y = 1408
⇒ 7z/5 + 4z/5 = 1408
⇒ 11z/5 = 1408
⇒ z = 640
