$x - \frac{1}{x} = - 1........(i)$

if...

$x - \frac{1}{x} = a \: then \\ \: x + \frac{1}{x} = \sqrt{ {a}^{2} + 2 }$

so

$x + \frac{1}{x} = \sqrt{3} .........(ii)$

multiplying equation i and ii

${x}^{2} - \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} } = - \sqrt{3}$
