6 would be the answer

x^2+(1/x^2) = 38
x^2 +(1/x^2) - 2 = 36
(x-1/x)^2 = 36
(x-1/x) = √36
x -1/x = 6

Remember (a-b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 -2ab
