x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  = 156  \:  \: and \: x - y = 12 \\  \\ now \\ (x  -  y) { }^{2}  = x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  - 2xy \\  (12) {}^{2}  = 156 - 2xy \\  - 2xy = 144 - 156 \\  - 2xy =  - 12 \\ xy =  - 12 \div  - 2 \\ xy = 6 \:  \: answer
