Answer:

x +  \frac{1}{x}  = 11

(x +  \frac{1}{x})^{2}  = 121

 {x}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{x^{2} }  + 2 \frac{x}{x}  = 121

(x/x cancelled)

 {x}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} }  = 121 - 2 = 119
