Question:-

If x + y = 10; x-y = 12, then find the value of x.

Solution:-

Given,

  • x + y = 10 .......( 1 )
  • x - y = 12 .......( 2 )

Then

( 2 ) - ( 1 )

x + y = 10

-x + y = -12

2y = -2

y = -2/2

\boxed{ \: y \:  =  \:  - 1 \: }

Substitute y in equation ( 1 ) to get the value of " x ":-

x + y = 10

x + ( -1 ) = 10

x - 1 = 10

x = 10 + 1

\boxed{ \: x \:  =  \:  11 \: }

Verification:-

Given,

x - y = 12

11 - ( -1 ) = 12

11 + 1 = 12

12 = 12
