Answer:

x+y=12 than (x+y)^2 = 144

and (x+y) ^2 = x2 + y2 +2xy

here put xy = 48

than,x2 + y2 = 144-48

=96

Given:

  • (x + y) = 12
  • xy = 24

To find:

  1. x² + y² = ?

Method:

We know that,

(a + b)² = a² + b² + 2ab

(x + y) = 12

Squaring on both sides,

(x + y)² = 12²

⇒ x² + y² + 2xy = 144

⇒ x² + y² + 2(24) = 144             [ ∵ xy = 24]

⇒ x² + y² + 48 = 144

⇒ x² + y² = 144 - 48

x² + y² = 96
