Given: x+y=13
xy=6,1/4=25/4
(x-y)sq.=(x+y)sq.-4xy
=(13)sq.-4×25/4
=13sq.-25
=13sq.-5sq. [by using identity: a sq.- b sq.=(a+b)(a-b)]
=(13+5)(13-5)
=18×8=144=12sq.
x-y =√12sq.
Therefore, x-y=12
