• x – y = 16
• xy = 24

So,

x + y

= √(x + y )²

= √ (x² + 2xy + y²)

= √ ( x² - 2xy + y² + 4xy)

= √{( x – y)² + 4xy }

Now , substituting the values we get ,

= √ { 16² + 4 × 24}

= √( 256 + 96)

= √ 352

= 4√22
