If x-y =4 and x2+y2=40 then x+y=? Explain it

x - y = 4

Squaring on both sides we get,

+ - 2xy = 16

40 - 2xy = 16

2xy = 24

xy = 12

y = 12/x

Well to get the values of x and y solve the two equations.
