If x+y=4 and xy=-12 find the value of x-y

Answer:

(x+y)²=x²+y²+2xy.

=>4²=x²+y²+2(-12)

=>x²+y²=16+24=40

(x-y)²=x²+y²-2xy

=40-2(-12)

=64

=>x-y=8
