x^2 + y^2

= (x+y)^2 - 2xy

= (4)^2 - 2 × 2 [ x+y=4 ; xy=2]

= 16 - 4

= 12

Step-by-step explanation:

given: X + Y = 2

XV=2

To find : X² + Y²

SOL.

X² + Y² = (X+Y)² - 2XY

X² + Y² = (4)² - 2(2)

X² + Y² = 16 - 4

X² + Y² = 12

Identity used : (a+b)² = a² + b² + 2ab

a² + b² = (a+b)² - 2ab
