I guess the answer is 10

If we take x as 3 and y as 1
x+y = 3+1 = 4
xy = x multiplied by y = 3 x 1 = 3
So...x^2 + y^2 = 3^2 + 1^2 = 3x3 + 1x1 = 9 + 1 = 10

Hope this helps
