x = 4 - y \\ (4 - y)y = 3 \\ 4y -  {y}^{2} = 3 \\  {y}^{2}  - 4y + 3 = 0 \\ {y}^{2}  - 3y - y + 3 = 0 \\ y(y - 3) - 1(y - 3) = 0 \\( y - 1)(y - 3) = 0 \\ y = 1 \\ y = 3 \\

x=3

x=1

x-y =2or - 2

Given : x + y = 4    , xy = 3

To Find :   Value of x - y

Solution:

x² + y ² - 2xy  = x² + y² + 2xy  - 4xy

| x - y | ²  = ( x + y) ²  - 4xy

=> | x - y | ²  = (4) ²  - 4(3)

=>  | x - y | ²  =  16 - 12

=>  | x - y | ²  =  4

=> |x -  y|  =  2

=>  x - y  =  ± 2

Value of x - y is    ± 2
