if [x-y]=5 & xy=6 then x^2+y^2=

( x - y) = 5
take square both side
x^2 + y^2 -2xy =25
x^2 + y^2 =25 +2xy
=25 + 2(6) = 25 + 12
=37

You have to use the formula [tex](x-y) ^{2} = x^{2} + y^{2} -2xy
So basically you have to square the (x-y) and solve.

Therefore the answer is 37.
