If x+ y = 5 and xy = 4 find the value of x - y.

x-y =3 or -3

Step-by-step explanation:

x + y =5 -(1)

xy=4    -(2)

from (2)

 y=4/x   -(3)

substitute (3) in(1)

x + (4/x) =5

x^2 -5x +4 =0

on solving we get

x =4,1

if x=4 then y=1

if x= 1 then y=4

so x-y =4-1 =3 or  1-4 =-3
