by squaring on both sides

x^2+y^2+2xy = 25

substitute xy now

x^2+y^2+12 = 25

x^2+y^2 = 13 - this is the first answer and take it as equation 1

By adding and subtracting 2xy in equation 1

x^2+y^2+2xy-2xy=13

(x-y)^2+2xy = 13

substituting xy

(x-y)^2 + 12 = 13

(x-y)^2 = 1

root on both sides

x minus y equals 1
