from (1)

x-5=y..........(3)

we are putting the value of y in eqn (2)

xy=6

=> x(x-5)=6

=> x^2-5x-6=0

=> x(x-6)+1(x-6)=0

=> (x-6)(x+1)=0

either, or,

x=6. x= -1(impossible) (check it yourself by putting this value in eqn 1 & 2 & 3)

we found that,

x=6

y=1(by putting the value of x in the eqn 3)

Now,

x+y=6+1=7
