In this equation y is considered as a variable.

x+y=6  ---------------- eq.1

x-2y=18 ---------------e.2

By subtracting eq.2 from e.1,

 x+y-[x-2y]=6-18

x+y-x+2y=-12

3y=-12

y=-4.

By putting the value of y in eq.1,

x+y=6

x-4=6

x=6+4

x=10
