If x + y = 8 and x - y = 4 . Find the value of xy

Let x+y = 8 ……(1)

and x-y = 4 ……(2)

Adding (1) and (2) , we get

x = 6 and putting this value in (1), we get

y = 2

So according to these values we get

x×y = 6×2 = 12

But we are given x×y = 18 , which is invalid.

But according to the values that we got above we have

x÷y = x/y = 6/2 = 3.

So, 3 is the right answer.
