Answer:

Squaring both sides of equation-

> (x-y)^2 = (8)^2

> x^2 + y^2 - 2xy = 64

> x^2 + y^2 - 2(5) = 64 (bcoz, xy=5 is give in the question)

> x^2 + y^2 -10 = 64

> x^2 + y^2 = 64+10

> x^2 + y^2 = 74

Therefore, x^ + y^2= 74
