Given :

  • x + y = 8
  • xy = 15

To Find :

  • x² - y²

Solution :

x + y = 8 ––––(1)

xy = 15 ––––(2)

From eq (1)

→ x + y = 8

x = 8 - y

Putting this value of x in eq (2)

→ xy = 15

→ (8 - y)y = 15

→ 8y - y² = 15

→ y² - 8y + 15 = 0

→ y² - (5 + 3)y + 15 = 0

→ y² - 5y - 3y + 15 = 0

→ y(y - 5) - 3(y - 5) = 0

→ (y - 5) (y - 3) = 0

y - 5 = 0

→ y = 5

y - 3 = 0

→ y = 3
