x + y = 8 (given)

Squaring on both sides,

(x + y)^2 = 8^2

x^2 + 2xy + y^2 = 64

But xy = 6 (given)

x^2 + 2(6) + y^2 = 64

x^2 + 12 + y^2 = 64

x^2 + y^2 = 64 - 12

x^2 + y^2 = 52

Hope this helps.......
