Answer:

x + y = 9..........(i)

x y = 14

y = 9 - x

Substituting the value of y in (i) we get,

x (9 - x) = 14

9 x - x^2 = 14

x^2 - 9 x + 14 = 0

x^2 - 7 x + 2 x + 14 = 0

x (x - 7) + 2 (x - 7) = 0

(x - 7) (x + 2) = 0

x =  7

As, y = 9 - 7 = 2

7 * 2 = 14

Hence, x = 7 and y = 2

Therefore, x^2 - y^2 = (7)^2 - (2)^2

= 49 - 4

= 45
