$given \: \: x + y = 32 \\ and \: \: \: \: \: xy = 32 \\ {(x + y)}^{2} = {x}^{2} + {y}^{2} + 2xy \\ {(32)}^{2} = {x}^{2} + {y}^{2} + 2(32) \\ 1024 = {x}^{2} + {y}^{2} + 64 \\ {x}^{2} + {y}^{2} = 1024 - 64 \\ {x}^{2} + {y}^{2} = 960$
