xy=16 .........(1)
x+y=9.........(2)
squaring on both sides, we get
(x+y)^2=(9)^2
=> x^2 + 2xy + y^2=81
=>x^2+y^2 = 81 - 2xy
=> x^2 + y^2 = 81 - 2 * 16
=>x^2+y^2=81 - 32
=> x^2+y^2=49
