Answer:

Given : x + y = 3 (Equation 1)

x = 3 - y

x² + y² = 5 ( Equation 2)

put the value of x in equation 2

(3-y)² + y² = 5

9 + y²-6y+y² = 5

2y² - 6y + 9 - 5 = 0

2y² - 6y + 4 = 0

2(y² - 3y + 2) = 0

y² - 3y + 2 = 0

y² - y - 2y +2 = 0

y(y - 1) - 2(y - 1) = 0

(y - 2) (y - 1) = 0

y = 2, 1

Put the value of y in equation 1

put y = 2, x = 3 - y

x = 3 - 2 = 1

put y = 1 , x = 3 - y

x = 3 - 1 = 2

Thus, the value of x = 2, y = 1

x = 1, y = 2
