on squaring both sides

(xy)^2=q^2...(1)

x+y=p

squaring both sides

(x+y)^2=p^2

x^2+y^2=(x+y)^2-2xy

=p^2-2q...(2)

1/x^2+1/y^2=x^2+y^2/(xy)^2

=p^2-2q/q^2..(from (1) and (2) )
