Answer:

The roots of the equation x2 – 6x + 5 = 0 are (x – 1) (x – 5) = 0 ⇒ x = 1, x = 5 Case (i) : x = 1 is a common root then it is also root for the equation x2 – 3ax + 35 = 0 ⇒ 1 – 3a(1) + 35 = 0 ⇒ a = 36/3 = 12 Case (ii) : x = 5 is a common root then (5)2 – 3a(5) + 35 = 0 ⇒ 60 – 15a = 0 ⇒ a = 4 ∴ a = 12
