see here i factorize first equation
X² - X - 6=0
X²- 3X +2X - 6= 0
(X-3)X +2 (X-3) =O
(X-3)(X+2) = 0

NOW I FACTORIZE SECOND EQUATION

X²+3X-18=0
X²+6X-3X-18 =0
X(X+6) -3(X+6)=0
(X+6)(X-3)=0
SO (X-3) IS COMMON FACTOR

Hey there !!!!!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
x²-x-6 = 0
Factorising
x²-3x+2x-6=0
x(x-3)+2(x-3) = 0
(x+2)(x-3)=0
x=-2, x= 3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

x²+3x-18=0

x²+6x-3x-18=0

x(x+6)-3(x+6)=0

(x-3)(x+6)=0

x=6 x= 3

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We can observe that both equations have x= 3 as a common factor
So x-3 is common factor and a=3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hope this helped you...................
