=> x^2 + 2×x×y + y^2 = 12

=> ( x + y )^2 + 2×2 = 12

=> ( x + y )^2 + 4 = 12

( x + y )^2 = 12 - 4

x + y = under root of 8

x + y = 2.83 approx
