Correct Question :-

If x² + y² = 26 and xy = 3, find the value of x - y.

Answer :-

x - y = 2√5

Solution :-

We know that

(x - y)² = x² + y² - 2xy

Here

• x² + y² = 26

• xy = 3

By substituting the values

⇒ (x - y)² = 26 - 2(3)

⇒ (x - y)² = 26 - 6

⇒ (x - y)² = 20

⇒ x - y = √20

It can be wriiten as (√20 = √4 * √5)

⇒ x - y = √4 * √5

⇒ x - y = 2 * √5

⇒ x - y = 2√5

Therefore the value of x - y = 2√5.

Identity used :-

• (x - y)² = x² + y² - 2xy
