(x + y) ^{2}  =  {6}^{2}

 {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  + 2xy = 36

 {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  + (2 \times 8) = 36

 {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  + 16 = 36
