If y axis is inter nuclear axis then 2py and 2py pair of orbitals can not form a bond.

  • The axial overlap results in sigma bond formation. And laterally overlapping results in pi bond formation.  Sigma bond contains alternating atomic orbitals s-s, s-p and p-p.
  • 2py and 2py wont form a bond. This is because when x - axis is taken as the internuclear axis, 2py and 2py orbitals overlap sideway, which forms a  pi bond .
