hope this helps u

y²-2y-3 = 0

y² +y -3y-3

(y² +y )  ( -3y-3)

y(y+1)   -3( y +1)

(y+1) (y - 3) = 0

y +1 =0        y -3 = 0

y = -1              y = 3

y = -1,3

if we subsuit both values we get answer as zero
