Yes, If we are caught in a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning while crossing an open field, it is right if we lie flat on the ground, that is ,face downwards because this defies the lightning being directly hit by us. Even if the lightning strikes us, the whole total effect of the lightning would be reduced lot because the ground acts as a earthing material which will conduct electricity through our body hence reduce the effect.

My answer is 'YES'.

It is safe to lie flat on the ground when we hear the thunder along with lightning while crossing an open field. It's because there are chances that a person may be put up in fire as a result of electric discharge from  lightning.

A lightning bolt can produce heat upto five times the sun's and contains nearly 300kV.

Lying flat on the ground facing downwards helps to get rid of injuries.

Even if it strikes the body the effect would be considerably reduced when compared with effect of standing as such.
