if you are given two samples how do you distinguish which one is metal and which is non metal

The two samples may be metal or nonmetal, so we can test by checking their physical properties like is substance is hard or soft . Electrical conductivity, ductility, sonorous, malleability, lustrous etc

if I am given two samples I distinguish between them with the help of a activity of burning the given samples and then whatever the ash I get I will add some water,mix it well and then test it with litmus paper
