If you are lost in a jungle, how can a topographical map help you to come out of the jungle?
Answers
Answer:
I would think a topographical map would make getting out a bit easier than a flat map because with a flat map you may not be able to find landmarks as easily. You’d have to wait until you come across something in a 2D plain that lets you know where you are in relation to the map.
But with a topographical map being 3 dimensional, you might be able to find a landmark letting you know where you are from further away (for example if you know there is a mountain with a 3000′ elevation in the direction you want to go… you may be able to see that from several miles away through the treeline. But with a 2D map if you know there is a river somewhere… you’d have to be much closer to realize where you are.
Now if you are in a flat jungle without much change in elevation, a topographical map may not be much better.

A topographical map shows terrain features and elevation.
Even without recognized features or locations, you could use a topographical map to navigate out of jungle simply by finding a river and following its course from its highest point, which would be the farthest point inland, to its lowest point, which would be in the direction of the coast
