No, being the president of Philippines (or any other country) I would certainly not allow the open use of GMOs.
Explanation:
As far as I understand about GMOs, these are organisms that are genetically modified (Genetically Modified Organisms). These organisms are not evolved naturally. They have been prepared under the laboratory conditions.
Yes it is true that they have been tested under strict lab conditions, but still experiments may go wrong. Any living organism whose genetics have been modified, is considered as artificially manipulated. These organisms can be in any form – Bacteria, fungus, plants, animals, even man.
Even if we take an example of GMO plant type, still there are benefits but there are drawbacks as well. These drawbacks can later on evolve in the form of side effects as well. Crossbreeding method can always go wrong and the new developed species is engineered type.
Let us not forget the case of COVID virus, it too is a mutated version (or we can genetically modified type). So medicines are of not much use here to fight this particular virus.
As far as Philippines is concerned, GMOs may be beneficial for farmers to certain extent. They can get better quality yield (or lets as better looking yield), as quality may not be guaranteed.
The crops that are GMOs types are disease free, and resistant to insects But at the same time, they may contain nutrients that are harmful for human consumption.
Philippines does not face drought like conditions every year so crops yields can be better if they are natural. GMOs use certain type of chemicals that may also harm the environment. so I would strictly not allow the open use of GMOs in my country.
