It is quite understandable why someone would want to replace the character, Shylock, in “The Merchant of Venice.” Had there never been Nazis in the world, perhaps everyone could get a good laugh at the odd norm of enmity toward the Jew. You will hear complaints, too, that the plot will fall apart, and we would lose an important piece of historical literature. Furthermore, without Shylock, we might end up with a villain on the order of something out of Marvel comics, a character who is completely unreal.
