If you could change the ending of the story hearts and hands, how would it be?

In the story “Hearts and Hands”, there were 3 characters that were on the eastbound B &M Express. In one coach was a beautiful lady ,who was surrounded by luxurious comforts that of an experienced traveller ,there were 2 latecomers; One was a hand some man with a frank look and the other was with a grumpy, not happy, face. Both were handcuffed together.
Miss Fairchild blushed after seeing Mr.Easton she started the talk and then reminded him of their old friendship . When she saw the handcuffs her lips parted and then understanding the situation the old man handeled the situation by interruping and saying that Mr.Easton is a marshall and he was talking him to the leavenworth prison “it was 7 ytears for counterfeiting” .Then her colour returned .Suddenly making an excuse of cigarette both men moved towards the smoking room .
Then we get to know the special twist of the story when we get to hear the conversation of two other passengers , in which the first passenger told that being a marshall at such an young age was amazing .Then the other man corrected him that the man ,Mr.Easton, was not the marshall but the old man was the marshall : “cause a marshall never hancuffes a man with his right hand it is always with his left hand.”
Therefore , Mr.Easton was a criminal who was taken to the leavenwoth prison for seven yr=ears by the old and grumpyman who was the real marshall .Miss Fairchild was mistaken by their lie.
