Answer:

Easy: equal access to opportunity.

Circumstances of birth aren’t going to change. Some people will be born with a silver spoon in their mouths, while the rest of us will have to work hard—and some really, really hard—to get access to the same things those folks take as their birthright. But if we could level the playing field, it would make the world a vastly better place.

A kid born in the projects has a ludicrously small chance of becoming a doctor compared to a kid born in an affluent suburb. But isn’t the world a better place if both kids have a more even handed ability to pursue that same dream? Think of the lives that could be saved. If both are equally talented, equally driven, then surely the Earth would be a better place with both able to pursue their dream.

This is why I support efforts to reduce the very real barriers preventing equal access to opportunity.

Wealth and privilege will always be an advantage—it’s been since time immemorial. But right now it isn’t just an advantage to achieving a dream: in too many cases, it’s a prerequisite.
