Explanation:

If you don't have anything nice to say, come sit next to me. If you can't say something good about someone, sit here by me. These words have also been credited to Alice Roosevelt Longworth who was the daughter of President Teddy Roosevelt and a long-time Washington socialite known for adroit remarks.

Answer:

Online or with people you don’t know, probably. Here on Quora, I never tag people to call them out, and rarely comment on answers to be critical of something they said unless it’s particularly egregious or horribly factually wrong on something I’m very confident on. I dislike unnecessary confrontation, and view arguing with people on the internet as wasteful and pointless.

At the same time, among friends, I’m very willing to be blunt and tell them exactly what I think and why, if asked first. “How can this be improved?” Is a very valid question, and if you care about the person, you absolutely should do your best to answer it to the best of your ability. There’s also a big difference between tearing the person down and explaining how they went wrong and what to do about it.
