Answer:

A few years ago, I was in Coimbatore. I was a visitor and it was my first visit to the city. This was a sunny Saturday afternoon and I was taking a walk in the city centre. I got into a restaurant for lunch after the walk. I do get lost in my thoughts at times. And it happened (again).

I had a satisfying lunch and it is at this time I realised that I had left my wallet back at the hotel where I stayed. Although, this has happened to me a couple of times before, it was different this time. I barely spoke the local language, was new to the town and I doubted if the waiter or the cashier would understand English. The problem obviously was my ability to communicate with them along with the awkwardness of the situation. I already knew how I would deal with the situation though.

It is customary in small towns of India to pick your bill, go straight to the cashier and pay for yourself. I went straight to the cashier. I did not know if the cashier was also the owner of the restaurant but I treated him so. I took my watch off and handed it over to him and said “Wallet at Hotel. Keep this - I will get money”.

He smiled at me and said, “Sir, why do you want to give me a collateral worth 10 times more than your bill? We are not going anywhere. Please bring your money when you can.”.

Of course, I was dressed for an interview so trusting me for what was not a considerable amount of money was the easy part. But, when a stranger is kind to you and shows maturity in terms of how he deals with an awkward situation, that produces feelings that are much more subtle than just being ‘pleasantly surprised’.

That one small incident made me want to be kind to strangers. And in a few awkward situations few years later, when life threw back similar settings at me, I was kinder than I would have.

Be kind and compassionate. I am not saying this because I am but for I know how difficult a trait it is to have.
