There are two ways to separate this mixture:

Using a magnet

The simplest way to get the job done is by using a magnet. This will effortlessly collect the iron filings from the sulphur powder, thus separating them.

Using a common solvent

Carbon Disulphide is a solvent under which Sulphur easily dissolves. To separate using this method, the steps go as follows:

  • Dissolving: Add Carbon Disulphide solution to the mixture and stir it well till the sulphur dissolves
  • Filtration: Set up the filtration apparatus and pass the mixture slowly into the funnel via the glass rod. The carbon disulphide solution will pass through the filter paper and will end up being collected as filtrate, and the iron filings will remain on the filter paper as residue.
  • Evaporation: Now we have to get back our sulphur powder. Set up  the evaporation apparatus. Heat the carbon disulphude solution on the bunsen burner. The carbon disulphide will evaporate, leaving behind the sulphur powder.

From these, the physical method(magnet) is a much easier and convenient method.
