Answer:
Ovaries: The ovaries produce and release eggs (oocytes)into the female reproductive tract at the mid-point of each menstrual cycle. They also produce the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone.
Uterus: The uterus is an organ of the female reproductive system. Its main function is to house and nourish a fetus until it’s ready for birth. The uterus sits in the middle of the pelvis, behind the bladder and in front of the rectum. The reproductive function of the uterus is to accept a fertilized ovum. The fertilized ovum becomes an embryo and attaches to a wall of the uterus, creates a placenta and develops into a fetus until childbirth.
Amniotic sac: Amniotic fluid is a pale yellow fluid that serves to cushion the unborn baby from jolts and bumps. It provides a stable temperature and assists in maintaining a consistent body temperature for the unborn child. The fluid allows the baby to move freely and exercise growing muscles to develop a symmetrical musculoskeletal system.
Placenta: The placenta connects the baby to the mother’s nutrients. It placenta makes hormones to continue the pregnancy, and can send the mother stem cells if she is injured. It protects the baby, and attaches the baby to the mother.
Umbilical cord: Throughout pregnancy, the umbilical cord functions as the lifeline between mom and baby, carrying nutrient-rich, oxygenated blood from the placenta to the developing baby via the umbilical vein. The baby, in turn, pumps nutrient-depleted, deoxygenated blood back to the placenta through the umbilical arteries. The cord tissue surrounding the umbilical vein and arteries acts like a cushion, preventing twisting and compression to ensure the cord blood flow remains steady and constant.
At birth, the average baby weighs about 7.5 pounds — though the range of normal is between 5.8 and 10 pounds.
The average length at birth for a full-term baby is 19 to 20 inches (about 50 cm). But the range for most newborns is between 18 and 22 inches (45.7 to 60 cm).
