Answers
Answer:
there are two ways for identifying acids and bases.
first is by detecting it's taste by tongue and second is by using indicators.
we don't prefer the first way because some acids and bases are very fatal and they may cause death. that's why we choose the second way...
there are many types of indicators :
1. natural indicator : they are obtained from nature.
they are of two types
2. synthetic indicator : they are prepared in laboratories. they are of two types : methyl orange and phenolphthalein
3. olfactory indicator : they are also natural indicator but they detect the acidic or basic nature by changing their smell. they are vanilla, onions and clove oil
ways for testing an acid or a base..
a. litmus --- if we dip a red litmus paper in base it will turn blue .
if we dip a blue litmus paper in acid it will turn red....
b. turmeric--- in acidic medium turmeric shows no change in colour but in basic medium they change their colour from yellow to reddish brown.
c . methyl orange: it is orange in colour. in acidic medium it's colour changes from orange to red and in basic medium it's colour changes from orange to yellow.
d. phenolphthalein : it is a colourless liquid like water. It remains colourless in acids but changes to dark pink in bases.
one more indicator is universal indicator... it does not detect only nature of chemicals but also detect their strength... for ex pH ...
hope it helps you....
