HELLO THERE!
If you hit a wall and a sponge, it is obvious that a wall will hit you more.
WHY?
The concept is based on impulse of force.
When you apply force (hit) on a wall, the wall too applies equal and opposite force on your hand. The wall applies a huge force on your hand and takes a very short time to stop the impact. Lesser the time taken to stop the impact, more is the impulse on your hand. So, you get more hurt.
Whereas, when you hit a sponge, your hand goes inside the sponge to some extent, due to which more time is required to stop the impact. So, the impulse on your hand is comparatively less, due to which you are less hurt when you hit a sponge.
HOPE MY ANSWER IS SATISFACTORY...
Thanks!
